STAR method answer builder

Turn a messy story into a STAR answer: situation, task, action, result. Checks the length, the balance and whether you finished with a number. Free, no sign-up.

Your answer

0 words · about 0s out loud

Fill in the four boxes above and your answer builds here.

Before you say it

  • Length. Fill in the four boxes to see how long this takes to say.
  • Weight on the action. The action should be the longest of the four.
  • A result you can measure. No number in the result. Add one: time saved, money, percentage, how many people, how much faster.
  • Your part is clear. You say what you did, not only what the team did.

The part that actually changes the outcome

A STAR answer that reads well often falls apart the first time you say it. Say this one to an AI interviewer and hear where it drifts.

Questions about this tool

What does STAR stand for?
Situation, Task, Action, Result. You set the scene in a sentence, say what you were responsible for, spend most of the answer on what you actually did, and finish with what changed — ideally a number.
How long should a STAR answer be?
Between about 60 and 120 seconds spoken, which is roughly 130 to 260 words. Past two minutes most interviewers stop following the thread. This tool times your answer as you type.
Should I say 'I' or 'we'?
Say 'we' about the team and 'I' about your part. An action section written entirely in 'we' is the most common reason a strong story scores badly: the interviewer cannot tell what you did.
Does this send my answer anywhere?
No. The builder runs entirely in your browser, there is no sign-up, and nothing you type leaves your device.
